Main Structural Components of Ship Loader & Unloader
Although ship loaders and unloaders differ in structure, they both consist of several basic modules:
Gantry/Saddle Beam: A massive steel structure supporting the entire equipment, capable of traveling along tracks and allowing rail cars or trucks to pass underneath.
Boom System: A long, pitchable and retractable arm used to deliver cargo to a designated location within the ship's hold or to retrieve material from the hold.
Conveyor System: The core component, including the conveyor belt, drive pulley, bend pulley, and idlers, responsible for the continuous transport of materials.
Tail Car (a key component of the ship loader): A transfer device connecting the rear ground-based conveyor belt to the ship loader's own conveyor belt.
Reclaimer (a key component of the ship unloader): The "hand" of the ship unloader. Common types include double-belt (clamped belt), spiral, chain bucket, and cyclic grab buckets.
Travel, Pitch, Slew, And Retractable Mechanisms: These enable the unloader to adjust its working position and cover the entire ship's cargo hold.
Dust Suppression System: This includes sprinklers, dry dust collectors, and other systems for dust suppression.
Control Room: Located in an optimal viewing area for the equipment, this is where the operator controls the entire process.
Main Types and Working Principles
• Working Principle: Materials from shore are transported to the ship loader's tail car via a conveyor belt conveyor on an underground corridor or elevated trestle. They are then transferred to the ship loader's own belt and then delivered to the various holds of the ship via its retractable, pitching boom.
• Types: Mainly classified as fixed ship loaders, mobile ship loaders (the most common), and swing ship loaders.
Based on their reclaiming and conveying principles, they can be divided into two major categories:
Continuous Ship Unloader (Mainstream Development):
• Working Principle: A continuously operating reclaimer removes materials from the hold and immediately feeds them into a closed, continuous conveying system (usually a conveyor belt), achieving uninterrupted "reclaiming and conveying" operations.
• Main Types:
Clamp-Belt Ship Unloader: Utilizes two synchronously running belts to clamp and convey materials upwards. They are particularly suitable for lightweight bulk cargoes such as grain and fertilizer. • Screw ship unloader: This unloader uses a high-speed rotating hollow screw with blades to reclaim material and lift it vertically, suitable for a variety of bulk cargoes.
Bucket chain ship unloader: This unloader uses an endlessly circulating bucket chain to scoop material, suitable for heavy bulk cargoes such as ore and coal.
Pneumatic ship unloader: This unloader uses vacuum suction to extract powdered materials (such as cement and fly ash), primarily used for tank bulk carriers.
Cyclic Ship Unloader
• Working principle: This unloader uses a grab bucket as the reclaiming device, and the operation process is a cyclical "grab-lift-run-unload" cycle. The grab bucket bridge ship unloader is a typical example. It resembles a giant bridge crane, running along tracks. The grab bucket scoops material from the hold and unloads it into a hopper, which then transports it away via a conveyor belt.
• Features: This unloader has wide adaptability, but is less efficient than a continuous ship unloader and produces higher levels of dust and noise.
